There is growing interest in playing Bass these days - there have been workshops and I have seen half a dozen people pick it up lately. However, price is rather a barrier with Kala U-Basses coming in at up to $850 RRP. The introduction of the Donner DUB-1 Ubass suddenly makes it more viable. At a mere $359 it has 90% of the quality of a Kala at half the price of some models.
After importing one to check it out I was mightily impressed. Here's a review:
and here's my own impressions: it's lighter than the Kala mahogany but still feels sturdy enough. As you'll see in the review, it is similar in looks to the Kala Exotic Mahogany - lighter in colour and with a lovely golden sheen. I actually really like the look. They say comes with Aquila Nylgut strings. To me they look and feel like Aquila Thundergut. However, either are good strings. Another thing that I like is the control panel: you have a tuner like a clip on tuner and 3 way eq - bass, mid and treble so you have a lot of control over the tone. Overall Kala have an edge on quality BUT here you are getting a perfectly good Ubass at a terrific price.
It comes with a padded gig bag and I'll throw in a strap.
